Cultural center of the philippines, CCP Complex

20 Mar

The cultural center of the Philippines is a sprawling complex commisioned by former first Lady, Imelda Marcos. The cultural center of the Philippines main building was designed by National Artist, Leonardo Locsin. The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex is the center for the performing arts of the whole country. Located along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, this is the premier venue for ballet presentations, concerts, stage plays, performances, exhibits and trade fair. The CCP was established by former President Ferdinand Marcos. During this period of the Marcos Presidency, the CCP Complex played host to major local and international events under the guise of the Bagong Lipunan (New Society), which would mark the start of a series of major construction projects in the area.  I must say that This place is one of the place that i want to live, this haven for joggers, bikers, runners and those who want to play badminton, basketball, and lawn tennis or engage in weekend activities which can be done in open area.

The parts of CCP Complex that i observed are the Badminton players occupy the front of The Coconut Palace, The Folk Arts Theater or Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas was built in 1974 for that year’s Miss Universe Pageant. I read from one of the banners there that it is also called Bulwagan ng Panginoon. The Manila Film Center’s stairs and ramp are challenging platforms for runners.

Landmarks are

  • Harbor Square is home to dining establishments like Starbucks. On mornings, aerobic and cardio classes are held there.
  •  Manila Yacht Club and the view from Harbor Square.
  • The Jumbo Floating Restaurant
  •  The Star City and Aliw Theater
  • The PICC or Philippine International Convention Theater where students are used to graduate here.

On my way home, I noticed this green lane. I just watched from the news that this is a new project of CCP in cooperation with various agencies. The Green Lane is part of CCP’s “Luntiang Lungsod, Luntiang Sining” (Green City, Green Arts) project which encourages biking for work or leisure.-End-

17 Mar

The University of the Philippines Diliman (commonly referred to as U.P. Diliman, or U.P.D., or informally,Peyups), is a coeducational and public research universitylocated in Quezon City, Philippines. It is the flagship university seat of administration, and the fourth oldest constituent university of the University of the Philippines system.  University of the Philippines, QC. One of the oldest yet Historical and popular university in the philippines. The thought of University of the Philippines reminds me of intelligent people. I actually admire UP students and to be  honest, it was once my dream to be one of those students  but unfortunately i was not able to make it. Hehehe. Going back to the topic, When Ar. De Asis conducted “Lakbay-aral” during my design subject wherein she lets us have a brief review for our upcoming design project regarding in doing plans of schools she made an elaborate description about the UP campus.

Some Part of the Shool:

  • The Carillon, University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman, Quezon City, Like the oblation, the UP Carillon is an iconic monument that symbolizes what the university means to alumni, students and visitors. The campus landmark evokes varied memories or associations for everyone.
  • The Oblation is one of the Philippines’ most famous sculptures. It was commissioned in 1935 by then UP President Rafael Palma, based on the second stanza of Jose Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios” and was sculpted by National Artist Guillermo Tolentino. Arch. De Asis (Proffessor During my Design 4) Said that This means that we students are always welcome in this school.
  • Ang Bahay ng Alumni. This proofs that UP Diliman is not only a school but also a home.  That everyone who would be staying here has its major role that should be treasure.
  • At the back of Ang Bahay ng Alumni is the track and field oval.
  • The Academic Oval is where people, students regularly run, all are welcome. It is a paved road of approximately 2.2 kilometers surrounded by major college buildings. Traffic is one way and the inner lane is exclusive for bikers, joggers and pedestrians.
  • U.P Sunken Garden. A playground for softball, baseball, soccer and frisbee games. Band concerts are also held at the grandstand during the annual U.P Fair
  • Juinio Hall/National Engineering Center
  • Parish of the Holy Sacrifice, The well known semi-spherical landmark catholic church inside the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City. The church is recognized as a National Historical Landmark and a Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Institute as well as the National Museum. It was designed by the late National Artist for Architecture, Leandro Locsin, one of five National Artists who collaborated on the project.
  • The Shopping Center where students don’t have to go so far.
  • The Dormitory where students are allowed to stay here rather than staying outside the campus why not stay here for a convenient living during your school days.
  • Quezon Hall, the seat of administration of both the UP System and UPD, was designed by Juan Felipe Nakpil, who was conferred the first National Artist for Architecture title in 1973. On the other hand, the PHS was designed by Leandro V. Locsin, who received the award in 1990.

Next is Cranbrook Art Museum

Cranbrook Art Museum is the largest museum in Southeast Michigan devoted exclusively to modern and contemporary art, architecture and design. The museum is also a repository and resource for the historical legacy of Cranbrook Academy of Art and its artists. Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum are collaborative partners with the institutions that comprise Cranbrook Educational Community, a pre-eminent international educational community dedicated to creativity and its expression as a way of life.

Now The main topic here is the comparison of Up Diliman and Cranbrook Art Museum:

The Quezon Hall of Up Diliman ANd The main Landmark of Cranbrook They differ in column in terms of the facade the structure of Quezon hall is much more modern than the Cranbrook Quezon hall have louvers or brisole while on the other hand doesnt have. Cranbrook is more simple while the Quezon hall is more elegant. Quezon hall has a passage through the Library i think? while on the other hand doesnt have.

Art Deco Architecture

17 Mar

The term ‘Art Deco’ has been used to describe design and architecture from the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s that was characterized by bright colours, geometric shapes, and decorative motifs deriving from a wide range of visual sources from the early years of the 20th century. Art deco was said to be the most decorative form of art. The Geometric patterns, Ziggurat are all in the name of beauty. I very quickly fell in love with the style, as it was a representation of all that was modern, luxurious and beautiful. Their features are:

  • Cubic forms
  • Ziggurat shapes: Terraced pyramid with each story smaller than the one below it
  • Complex groupings of rectangles or trapezoids
  • Bands of color
  • Zigzag designs
  • Strong sense of line
  • Illusion of pillar
Hollywood used it to define the good life. Art Deco buildings were built into the 1940s. But in the birthplace of the skyscraper, it was over.Streamline Moderne the consequence of the Depression was the emergence of a more austere architectural style, Are you wondering  why not just say Art Deco? Because nearly everything about the Streamline Moderne was different and sometimes even opposed to Art Deco. Skycrapers the style that once was held in america and adopted through out the century here in the philippines. If Art Deco skyscrapers could be thought of as “vertical”, Streamline Moderne buildings frequently displayed horizontal massing (sometimes even intended to be aerodynamic!) The ornament in a streamlined building (if any) was typically modest, whereas with Art Deco, the sky was the limit. While Art Deco buildings dazzled with intricate details and sharp angles, streamlining featured clean surfaces and curves. In a few places, both styles were combined but in the simplest terms, Art Deco was born before the financial collapse and Streamline Moderne, after.

Acoording to our proffessor, Philippines has one of the most number of Art deco style one of these are:
  • Metropolitan theather
  • Far Eastern University
  • Quezon bridge
  • University of the Philippines, QC
Theathers:
  • Capitol Theater
  • Avenue Theater
  • Ideal Theater

Art Deco Style has been adopted throughout the Centuries and still it has its own Beauty that we should be proud of.

Binondo church

19 Feb

Binondo Church in Manila is the oldest church that was built in 1596.The Binondo Church of Manila is also known as Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz. The Manila Binondo Church used to be a fine example of Spanish architecture. It was rebuilt in stone Upon seeing the church, I felt a certain sense of awe, inside my head, I was saying to myself,  faith and determination made it possible for the church to survive the many challenges that it faced. The beauty of the facade is not something that one sees everyday. There is a sense of continuity, one wouldn’t know where the new structure began to meet that of the old structure of the Bell Tower.Image

Upon entering the church and to your right, you will see this image of the crucified Christ. In front of the Crucified Christ, is a place where you can light candles to offer prayers for deceased loved ones or to pray for guidance during exams. Seeing the main altar, I was breathlessly impressed by the details of the altar. It is so amazing!

I do not regret getting married in the church that I chose as the subject on my blog, since it had significance in our lives. But given the opportunity to celebrate my marriage and renew my vows in the future, I will not think twice about going to the Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. It is not only a church with significance in our history as a nation, but it has significance to the faith of the Filipino people.

Metropolitan Theater (Photos)

19 Feb

Image

Pinkishly faded walls. So sad seeing that Met is already abandoned, It was full of Beggars making it as their own place, Broken glass windows and it is merely full of web, insects etc. I must say this place looks like a vision of a ‘Haunted House’ Hehehe. The Government should allow for proposals for the renovation of this because this are few buildings that symbolized how we stood up during WWII.

Metropolitan theater (MET)

19 Feb

Metropolitan Theater is an example of supreme Art Deco building, Designed in  December 10, 1931 by National Artist for Architecture, Juan Arellano unfortunately it was badly damaged during wartime and  Former first Lady, Imelda Marcos tried to restore it but finally fell in late 90’s .The sculptures in the façade of the Theater are from the Italian sculptor Francesco Monti.

The Metropolitan Theater, being one of the most celebrated Art Deco structures in the Philippines, used to hold world-class theatrical performances, operas, musicales, pageants, and other lofty events during its heyday. Metropolitan Theatre was one of the most beautiful art-deco stucture before the war. It looked like an oversized music organ or a crown. It is one of the most historic places in the Philippines and should be preserved to the utmost. What makes the Metropolitan Theater Filipino is the mixture of cultures that is represented by the fusion of art and architecture. The Metropolitan Theater was a source of Filipino pride in the past and i think for some like me as well and for those people who appreciates art even though the fact that its no longer have its elegance or its beauty.

I have chosen the Metropolitan Theater as the subject for my Blog because of the fascinating architecture and fascinating history behind it. I hope it would be restored to give way to future and young talents as well. Met is one of the pioneers in the evolution of the filipino culture. The Metropolitan Theater, being one of the most celebrated Art Deco structures in the Philippines, used to hold world-class theatrical performances, operas, musicales, pageants, and other lofty events during its heyday.

San Sebastian Church

18 Dec

I do appreciate fine architecture and artistic creations. To counter the monotony of steel, the finely-proportioned halls of San Sebastian are painted to look like marble –from the columns, walls, ceilings to the trim, scrollwork and ribbing. The whole church is made up of steel, The steel church to be permanent as a solution to the frequent earthquakes . As i walked up the steps leading to the church’s main entrance. The wooden door was painted light green, with white hue on its neo-Gothic lines. The pastel exterior finish gives a bright and clean look to the church. The stained glass windows commissioned from Germany are finely crafted and well maintained has remained expressive. The long aisle leads to a main altar As i walking the aisle, It feels like i am the bride and my groom waited for me in the altar it feels so flattered and i cant imagine what will i feel when that moment come marrying he person i loved and a church that is replete with history How romantic uhhh. The main altar and pulpit are made of wood and trimmed with gold leaf. The church is designed with a neo-gothic architecture. it really surprised me the church is definitely fabulous! It has a west and east openings just like a usual chuch. The church has six water fonts; each crafted using marbles. Pointing to the ceiling, on the arc just above the altar, and the walls, she continued: “Those were trompe l’oeil paintings, retablos, and santos. They were painted using a technique that involves exceptionally realistic imagery to create an optical illusion. If the painted images are still clear, they would seem to appear tri-dimensional. All in all it applies a strength and beauty that filipinos should be proud of.

The End.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year sir!
